Dental crowns are used to restore teeth that are heavily damaged by cavities, fractures, or severe wear.   A crown is much like a cap that goes over the top of the tooth and replaces the lost or damaged enamel.  A crown can help to protect a weakened tooth and prevent further breakdown.

Dental Bridges in Aston, PA

A dental bridge is similar to a crown but usually serves a different purpose.  Although bridges can serve to repair and protect badly broken down teeth, its primary purpose is to replace missing teeth.  A bridge is 3 or more crowns that are made as one piece in order to replace a missing tooth or teeth in the middle.  At least one tooth on either side of a missing tooth is needed to support a bridge.  The bridge is then cemented in place.

If you're considering getting a crown for your front tooth, you may be wondering which type is best. There are a few different options, and the best one for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Of course, as dental professionals, we have our recommendations, but your opinion absolutely matters and is important to us—and is certainly taken into consideration.

While there are many materials we can use, Dr. Seger opts for high-strength zirconia crowns. The results offer exceptional durability and a perfect, customized fit. Zirconia restorations can withstand the forces of chewing and teeth grinding without chipping, unlike porcelain. Ultimately, the best type of crown for your front tooth is the one that meets your needs and fits your budget.

How We Use Dental Crowns

If you get a cavity, we need to fill the tooth to eliminate discomfort, prevent further damage, and restore function. Without treatment, though, decay will cause so much damage that a filling may not be enough to protect the tooth, and Dr. Seger will recommend a dental crown.

A crown fits over your tooth like a helmet to strengthen and protect it from further damage. Some cases where we would recommend a crown are:

  • Strengthen a tooth damaged by decay, infection, or trauma
  • Protect and strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Restore a dental implant to add function and improve the appearance
  • Improve the esthetics of a tooth by altering its appearance

There are many materials that we can use, but Dr. Seger chooses high-strength zirconia crowns that are milled using computers. The result is a perfect, customized fit andIllustrations of dental crowns in Aston PA exceptional durability.

Placing Your Dental Crown

The process of placing a new crown usually takes two visits. During these visits, we:

  • Reshape your tooth to allow enough room for the crown to fit properly
  • Take impressions to create a model of your teeth
  • Send the model to a custom dental lab for fabrication
  • Create a temporary to wear while the lab makes your new crown

Custom fabricating your new crown takes about two to three weeks, and when it’s ready, we’ll make an appointment to check it for fit, make any adjustments, and cement it in place. With proper care, your new crown can last many years.

Dental Bridges

There are several good reasons to replace a missing tooth. You have a gap in your smile that looks unattractive and makes you feel self-conscious, which is bad enough. But tooth loss can also cause difficulty eating and speaking, and adjacent teeth can drift into the open space causing tooth misalignment and bite problems.

The purpose of a dental bridge is to fill the open space left by a missing tooth. Bridges are typically a three-piece unit that includes an artificial tooth (pontic) that sits in the open space and a crown on either side that we cement to adjacent teeth for support. This results in a seamless appearance and restores your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently again.
