Both manual and power toothbrushes can be used to effectively remove plaque from teeth.
However, for the majority of people, an electric toothbrush will provide better and more efficient plaque removal over a manual brush.  This is especially true for people with limited dexterity or people that have difficulty working with a manual toothbrush.  Many power brushes have additional features such as timers and pressure indicators that can help to ensure you are brushing long enough and with proper pressure.  There are even some brushes for kids that can be linked to a smartphone or tablet that can make teeth brushing more interactive and fun for them.   Most patients will see an improvement in dental health from the proper use of a power toothbrush.

Many patients are anxious about dental visits because they worry that their procedure will hurt. At The Dental Health Center, we do everything possible to ensure that your treatment is as comfortable and efficient as possible.

Modernized Dental Care in Aston, PA

One of the most common fears people have about visiting the dentist is the dreaded needle, which can be scary for even the most courageous patients. But we have replaced the old-fashioned syringe with the latest technology in dental anesthesia. We use an instrument called The Wand that is popular with our patients because it delivers injections that are virtually pain-free.

The Wand is a computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery system that is the size of a pen and is less scary looking than a dental syringe. Combined with our soft-touch dentistry, The Wand ensures a painless delivery of the local anesthetic and a comfortable experience during your procedure.

Children's Dentistry

Many parents think baby teeth are not very important because they eventually fall out. However, they are just as important as the permanent teeth that will follow. Baby or primary teeth help your child learn to chew and speak and also hold space in the jaw for permanent teeth to emerge correctly. For this reason, it is important to begin visits to the children's dentist in Aston, PA at an early age.

Children's Dentistry in Aston, PA

Young girl smiling outside near pediatric dentist in Aston PADr. Seger likes to see children when the first baby tooth appears but no later than age one. He needs to monitor your child’s oral health from the time baby teeth first erupt because decay in baby teeth increases the risk of cavities in permanent teeth. Your child is at a higher risk of decay if teeth are exposed to sugar for long periods, which is why you shouldn’t put your baby to sleep with a bottle in their mouth.

Early visits also benefit your child because we want them to get comfortable with Dr. Seger and our team slowly and at their own pace. It’s crucial that we first see your child when they aren’t experiencing any pain. We don’t want you to wait until there’s a problem because the chances are that your child will associate the discomfort they feel with dental visits, which can result in a lifetime of dental anxiety.

Contact The Dental Health Center to Schedule

If you have questions or would like to schedule your child’s first appointment, please call our Aston, PA dentist office at (610) 494-0404. We look forward to welcoming your little one and helping them get started with a lifetime of healthy, happy smiles.

Preventive Services

Dentist and patient reviewing dental x-ray in Aston PAMany oral health can arise without any symptoms. X-rays allow our 19014 dentist to see into parts of the body that we cannot visually examine.

The Importance of Dental X-Rays

Early to moderate tooth decay generally has no symptoms and can occur between teeth where we can’t see them. Digital dental x-rays allow us to identify decay in these areas, which would not be possible without their use. We also use x-rays to check for possible infections around the roots of your teeth. Dental abscesses can develop without any symptoms and are usually not detectable without an x-ray.

Contact Our Dentist Office Near Twin Oaks, PA

If you’re concerned about your safety, you’ll be pleased to know that at The Dental Health Center we use state-of-the-art digital x-rays. This technology allows us to take highly detailed images of your teeth and reduce your exposure by about 80 percent compared to film x-rays. Another advantage of digital x-rays is that we can share the images with you on your chairside monitor. When you see the problem for yourself, you can easily understand why you need treatment and how it will benefit your long-term oral health.

We want you to feel completely safe and comfortable with your treatment, so if you have concerns about x-rays, please call our office at (610) 494-0404!

Developing tooth decay is usually a slow process that can sometimes take years to progress into a cavity. It begins as enamel breaks down and loses some of its mineral content. As the process continues, enamel loses more mineral content until the structure breaks down and a hole or “cavity” is formed.

Some Cavities Do Not Show Symptoms Digital graphic of tooth colored filling restoring cavity in Aston PA

Early and moderate tooth decay often has no symptoms, or you may notice only some sensitivity to temperature and sweets. The lack of symptoms from early tooth decay is due to the fact that the nerve tissue in teeth is located at the center of the tooth. It takes some time before tooth decay can penetrate far enough into the tooth for the nerve to become affected and become symptomatic.

Bad Tooth Pain from Cavities

The problem is that by the time the nerve is involved and causes pain, the cavity is at an advanced stage and the tooth will require further treatment to correct the problem. When Dr. Dan Seger identifies and fixes cavities before they affect the nerve and become painful, he can generally fix the tooth with smaller, more conservative dental fillings instead of using advanced restorative techniques.

Schedule Your Next Dental Exam in Aston, PA!

The best time to schedule an appointment is when you don’t have any symptoms. Routine visits to The Dental Health Center as instructed by Dr. Seger will keep your smile healthy and a step ahead of serious dental conditions.

If you want to avoid problems by maintaining good oral health, preventive dental cleanings are essential. The general recommendation by the American Dental Association is to have cleanings every six months. But each of our patients is unique, and if Dr. Seger suggests more frequent intervals, it’s because they're needed to help you stay a step ahead of gum disease and tooth decay.

Dental Cleaning Procedure at The Dental Health Center

During a professional dental cleaning in Aston, PA, our dental hygienist uses specialized dental instruments to get in the tiny spaces between your teeth and gently clear away plaque and tartar that your toothbrush can’t reach. If we don’t routinely remove this debris, it attracts bacteria that increase your risk of decay and gum disease.

For patients with a history of gum disease, we usually recommend cleanings at three to four-month intervals to help ensure that gum disease does not progress or recur. If you experience rapid tartar buildup, you will require more frequent cleanings.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Once the cavity has been removed from the tooth, our dentist will begin to place the tooth colored filling material. An adhesive bonding agent is placed that creates a bonded attachment between the tooth and the filling.

The resin is then placed and sculpted to replace the missing tooth structure. A special curing light is then used to set and harden the resin material.  After the filling is placed and set, we will adjust and fine-tune the filling so that it fits within your normal bite, and then polish everything back to a smooth shine.

There are two primary benefits to choosing tooth-colored composite fillings in Aston, PA.

Cosmetic Benefits of Tooth Colored Fillings

One of the reasons we like using composite fillings for esthetic repairs is that we can closely match the shade of the filling to the color of your natural dental enamel. Dr. Seger carefully sculpts the material to match the contours of your tooth, creating a discreet repair that even you won't be able to detect.

Health Benefits of Dental Fillings

Our goal is to preserve the natural structure of your teeth for as long as possible. So unlike metal fillings that require us to remove a lot of your tooth, tooth-colored fillings are bonded directly to the remaining tooth structure. The advantage is that we can preserve the structure, and bonding the material directly to your tooth creates a strong, durable bond and a long-lasting repair.

Dental Implants

Dental implants in Aston, PA are a healthy solution for replacing missing teeth. They may seem like a recent innovation, but implants have actually been used successfully for over 40 years!

Dental Implants in Aston, PA Dental implant replacing missing tooth at Aston dentist office

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in your jaw by a skilled oral surgeon and takes the place of the lost root. Titanium is a biocompatible material, meaning your body easily accepts it. During healing, the implant bonds with bone and tissue in your jaw and becomes a permanent part of your dental structure.

After the implant heals, we can choose one of several dental restorations to act as the visible, functional part of the implant. Depending on your needs we may recommend a dental crown, bridge, or full or partial denture.

The end result is a new tooth that feels and acts as close to a natural tooth as possible. Your implant is permanent, and your restoration won’t decay. However, you still need to be proactive with your oral health because healthy gums are essential to the success of your implant.

If you are interested in learning more about dental implants, please call our Aston, PA dental office at (610) 494-0404 to arrange a convenient consultation with Dr. Seger.

Teeth Whitening

Among the most common treatment options for improving your smile’s brightness are professional teeth whitening kits. These usually consist of trays that fit over teeth and a whitening gel you apply to the tray. You then place that tray in your mouth, over your teeth, and keep it in place for a period that allows the gel to coat your tooth surfaces to remove staining.

With such a simple, straightforward process, you’ll find dozens of products available. Here is how to choose the best.

Professional Teeth Whitening Kits vs. Over-the-Counter Options

One major division in teeth whitening kits is between professional products supplied by a licensed dentist compared to over-the-counter kits. At your local store, you will find several kits you can buy without consultation. But cosmetic dentists like Dr. Daniel R. Seger, DMD at the Dental Health Center prefer a more proven teeth whitening system, which only they may provide. Here are a couple of differences:

  1. Your teeth whitening tray – Your professional whitening tray is custom-created to fit your mouth snugly. This fit keeps the whitening agent more evenly distributed and tightly against your teeth. The over-the-counter tray is generic and works as such.
  2. Your teeth whitening gel – Store-bought teeth whitening gel’s strength is significantly less than what your dentist can offer. And to help you use your gel correctly, your dentist can give you careful instructions, answer questions, and advise you what to look for in case of incorrect usage.

Crowns & Bridges

The initial procedure for dental crowns in Aston, PA will consist of Dr. Dan Seger removing the area that is compromised by either bacteria or breakage.

At the initial visit for a crown, the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown, and then an impression is made. The impressions of your teeth are sent to a dental lab that will use the impressions of your teeth to make your crown.

The Dental Crown Procedure in Aston, PA

A temporary crown is fabricated and cemented in place with temporary cement. After two to three weeks, the lab will send us the finished crown. At the second visit, we gently remove the temporary crown and then cement in place the lab created crown. Dental crowns are used to restore teeth that are heavily damaged by cavities, fractures, or severe wear.   A crown is much like a cap that goes over the top of the tooth and replaces the lost or damaged enamel.  A crown can help to protect a weakened tooth and prevent further breakdown.

Dental Bridges in Aston, PA

A dental bridge is similar to a crown but usually serves a different purpose.  Although bridges can serve to repair and protect badly broken down teeth, its primary purpose is to replace missing teeth.  A bridge is 3 or more crowns that are made as one piece in order to replace a missing tooth or teeth in the middle.  At least one tooth on either side of a missing tooth is needed to support a bridge.  The bridge is then cemented in place.

If you're considering getting a crown for your front tooth, you may be wondering which type is best. There are a few different options, and the best one for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Of course, as dental professionals, we have our recommendations, but your opinion absolutely matters and is important to us—and is certainly taken into consideration.

While there are many materials we can use, Dr. Seger opts for high-strength zirconia crowns. The results offer exceptional durability and a perfect, customized fit. Zirconia restorations can withstand the forces of chewing and teeth grinding without chipping, unlike porcelain. Ultimately, the best type of crown for your front tooth is the one that meets your needs and fits your budget.

Transparent aligner systems like Invisalign® are a newly emerging alternative to conventional wire and bracket orthodontics. This system is especially popular with adults and teenagers for numerous reasons, among them, being:

  • Comfort  made of a special blend of nylon and acrylic plastic, clear aligners are softer on your gums and won't cut your cheeks or tongue with broken wires
  • Appearance with a name like Invisalign, it's no mystery that this system practically disappears against your teeth. Others may never know you're wearing them!
  • Less Hassle  clear aligner trays are removable so that you can eat and drink without incumbrance. You also take them out to brush and floss, which is much easier than working around a bunch of metal.

Finally, Invisalign treatment is usually accomplished in a shorter amount of time than conventional braces. The length of your treatment will depend on your particular case. For example, if your smile is only slightly misaligned, you could complete treatment in less than a year.

Your Treatment Plan will Answer Questions

Another advantage of the Invisalign system is the planning that goes into it. Using digital technology, we map out each step of your treatment with a high degree of accuracy. Then once you've begun wearing your aligners, you will change to the next in the series about every two weeks.

Invisalign in Aston, PA, is an innovative orthodontic system created from custom tooth aligners. These tooth trays are virtually transparent and don’t draw attention to your orthodontic treatment.

Besides discretion, you can also count on a more comfortable fit with Invisalign and fewer dentist trips compared to traditional braces.

With Invisalign, we take initial impressions, send the results to the Invisalign lab, and they create your custom aligner series. Then, you come in to pick up your aligners and change them out every two weeks on your own or according to the schedule provided by your dentist. You only visit us periodically to ensure your teeth are lining up on schedule. With traditional braces, you must come in more frequently.

However, the number of dental visits you’ll need with Invisalign varies by patient, as does the treatment timeline. For example, some patients need Invisalign for several months, and others can wear their aligners for up to two years.

Invisalign clear braces have radically changed the way dentists approach orthodontic treatment. When you meet with an Invisalign dentist near me, they will carefully evaluate your needs to see if you are a good candidate.

However, while clear aligners are a highly effective treatment for millions of people, they have their limits.

Orthodontic Problems Invisalign Can’t Fix

Several orthodontic situations are more appropriate for traditional braces, including:

Serious Bite Issues

If your dentist determines you have a bad bite or severe malocclusion, they will probably recommend traditional braces, possibly in combination with other orthodontic treatments.

Severely-Rotated Teeth

Invisalign can treat rotated teeth only if they are 20 degrees or less out of position. For more severely rotated teeth, braces that provide adequate force would be more appropriate for moving these teeth into the proper position.

Very Wide Tooth Gaps

Invisalign is perfect for correcting smaller gaps between front teeth, but those larger than 6mm will require traditional orthodontics.

Oddly-Shaped Teeth

Some teeth can’t fit properly inside the clear aligner, making Invisalign treatment ineffective. This includes teeth that are short, pegged, round or have severe tips.

Schedule an Invisalign Appointment

While Invisalign has limitations, most people are excellent candidates and can attain a straighter, more attractive smile. Please call The Dental Health Center in Aston, PA, to schedule an appointment.
